Subject: Seeking SWW Veteran for 80th anniversary of Liberation of the Netherlands and VE Day

Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and the Canada Remembers Program are dedicated to preserving the legacy of bravery and sacrifice of those who have served, and continue to serve, Canada during war, armed conflict and peace. We also promote awareness of the lasting impact these contributions have on Canadian life today. Commemorative events, both at home and abroad, play a key role in fulfilling this mandate of remembrance and recognition.

To mark the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands and Victory in Europe Day, the Government of Canada is planning a number of events to take place both in Canada and The Netherlands in early May 2025.

We would be delighted to have your organization put forward names of any Second World War (SWW) Veterans, who are potentially fit for travel, to join one of the official delegations traveling to either Toronto, ON, or to The Netherlands. Priority should be given to those SWW Veterans who served in The Netherlands, but all SWW Veterans may be considered. All travel and living expenses in Canada and overseas associated with the commemorative programs will be covered by VAC. Please note that these names are simply proposed and not guaranteed to participate.

In order for VAC to ensure that each delegate receives the best possible support during the program, each SWW Veteran is required to designate a caregiver to accompany them. Veterans and their caregivers will share a hotel room and all travel and living expenses of each approved caregiver will also be covered by VAC. It is important to remember that a caregiver must be capable and willing to perform all necessary care and must always remain with their delegate.

Although a dedicated medical team will accompany the overseas delegation, the demands of travel and event participation require that all members of the delegation be in good health. Nominees will be asked to have their physician complete a medical information form and certify that they are able to withstand the rigors of travel and event participation. Final travel approval will be at the discretion of VAC’s contracted medical doctors.

For international travel, all travelers will be required to have a passport that is valid until at least 10 August 2025 (at least three months beyond the expected date of return) and are also encouraged to hold personal travel medical insurance.

A nomination form is attached for your completion.

Upon receiving your nominations, the nominees will be contacted directly and provided with more information regarding the program, their eligibility and the role of the caregiver.
